The Website Redesign Checklist That Protects Your Sales

The Website Redesign Checklist That Protects Your Sales

Most redesigns make a site prettier and quietly make it sell less. A redesign should protect what's working before it changes anything.

Measure before you touch anything

Record your current conversion rate, top pages, and where visitors drop off. Without a baseline you can't tell whether the new design helped or quietly cost you sales.

Keep what already converts

Identify the pages and elements that bring in customers and protect them. Redesigns go wrong when a cleaner look removes the exact words, proof, or buttons that were doing the selling.

Change in steps you can verify

Roll out changes in stages and compare against the baseline. A big-bang relaunch hides which change helped and which hurt; staged changes let you keep the wins and reverse the misses.

Key takeaways

  • Capture a baseline of conversions and drop-off before redesigning.
  • Protect the pages and elements that already convert.
  • Ship changes in stages you can measure.
  • Reverse anything that drops performance, fast.

The bottom line

A redesign should grow sales, not gamble with them. Measure first, protect what works, and change in steps you can prove.

The redesign that finally made the site sell

A client had a beautiful site that didn't sell a thing. We changed what it said before we changed how it looked.

I started where most people do — cleaner layout, better photos, a fresh font. It looked sharper and still converted nothing.

The traffic was fine. People landed, scrolled, and left. The problem wasn't design taste; it was that the page never said what they would get or who it was for.

Frustrated, because the prettier version proved a point I didn't want to admit — looks don't sell.

The analytics were clear about where people dropped, and that gave me something concrete to fix instead of guessing.

We rewrote the top of every page around one outcome and one buyer, put the proof above the fold, and cut three menus down to one action.

A redesign that ignores the words is just decoration. Fix the message first; the layout serves it.

I now write the page before I design it — outcome, buyer, proof, action — then style around that spine.
