Test the Room Before You Fill It
The classic launch mistake is building first and finding buyers later. Validate demand before you build the doors.
Here's the launch mistake almost everyone makes once: you spend weeks building the thing — the course, the product, the program — you open the doors with a flourish, and almost nobody walks through. The work was real. The demand wasn't there. And you found out far too late.
The fix is to flip the order. Test the room before you fill it. Find out whether people actually want the thing before you pour your time into making it. Demand first, doors second.
How to test the room
You have cheap ways to check for real interest before you build. Pre-sell it, and see if anyone pays before it exists. Open a waitlist and watch how fast it fills. Run a small paid pilot to a handful of people. Or simply describe the idea to your audience and pay attention to whether they lean in or shrug.
The signal you're looking for isn't polite encouragement. It's action — a payment, a signup, a "when can I start." Words are cheap; behavior is honest. If you float the idea and hear crickets, that's not failure. That's the cheapest, earliest feedback you'll ever get, and it just saved you weeks.
Build what's already wanted
Testing first changes what you build. Instead of guessing and hoping, you make the thing people already raised their hands for. The launch gets easier, because you're not creating demand from scratch — you're filling a room that's already waiting.
So before the next big build, run a small test. Ask for a real commitment, not a polite nod. If people show up, build with confidence. If they don't, you've lost a conversation instead of a month.
