Willpower is overrated. What actually drives most behavior is the room you're in — the people around you and what they quietly expect. Drop someone into a group where everyone shows up, contributes, and follows through, and they tend to do the same, not because they decided to but because the room expects it. People finish what a room expects of them.

This is one of the most useful forces a creator can put to work. The same person who abandons a solo course will complete the same material inside a community where others are visibly doing the work. The content didn't change. The expectations did.

Set the norms on purpose

Every room has norms, whether you shape them or not. In a strong community, the unspoken standard is "we show up, we try, we help each other." In a weak one, it's "we lurk." The good news is you can set the tone deliberately, especially early. Welcome people in a way that signals participation is normal. Celebrate the members who do the work, so others see what's expected. Make contributing easy and visible.

Once those norms take hold, they enforce themselves. New members arrive, look around, and match the room. The expectation does the work that nagging and reminders never could, because people would rather meet a group's standard than fall short of it.

So don't rely on your members' willpower, and don't lean on your own reminders. Build a room whose expectations pull people forward. Set the standard early, reward the behavior you want, and let the room expect the best of the people in it.
